The fourth annual WineMaker label contest reminded us here at Battenkill Communications that our publications stretch far beyond the rural Vermont community where we come to work everyday. This year, we put on our judging hats and opened packages with return addresses from an array of countries across the globe, as well as many from here in U.S. After hours of enjoyment judging the beautiful artwork and sharing laughs over witty anecdotes that complemented the submissions, we had four grand prize candidates from three countries: Israel, Germany and the United States. From the WineMaker staff, we’d like to thank all who spent the time to participate and share their work for this event.

<p><strong><font size="3">Dr. Raphy Singer</font></strong><font size="3"> • </font><strong><font size="3">Beit Shemesh, Israel</font></strong><br /> </p> <p>Dr. Singer designed this label with the help of Yolande Tourgeman, one of his patients. A budding artist and amateur photographer, Tourgeman took a series of photographs of broken wine bottles and gave them to Dr. Singer to make into labels. She was fascinated by the light reflecting from the different colored shards of glass and we as judges were equally impressed. Yolande's secret to photography is to look beyond the ordinary and see the amazing. Dr. Singer believes that the advice is applicable to good winemaking as well and writes, We look at ordinary fruit or grapes, and transform them into amazing wine.</p> <p>Prizes: Fleece vest from White Labs, Inc., Gift Certificate from My Own Labels, Full ATC refractometer from Valley Vintner </p>

Grand: Dr. Ralphy Singer
<p><strong><font size="3">Christoph Seiler</font></strong><font size="3"> • </font><strong><font size="3">Altlussheim, Germany</font></strong></p> <p>Christoph Seiler submitted 15 beautiful labels from Altlussheim, Germany. A close friend to Markus “Olivio” Abel who was featured in August-September 2003’s Cellar Dwellers, Christoph utilized this label contest to discover which of his labels that he designed for Olivio’s wine was best. Although all of his labels were strong, the simplicity of the “Spicy Grape: 2002er Phoenix Weisser Tafelwein Oberrhein,” stood out to us. </p> <p>Prizes: Gift certificate from My Own Labels; 400 corks from Bader Beer &amp; Wine Supply; Five vials of wine yeast from White Labs, Inc.</p>

Gold: Christoph Seiler
<p><font size="3"><strong>Greg and Molly Sparhawk</strong> • <strong>Arvada, Colorado</strong></font> </p> <p>This label was made for their first kit wine and was inspired by a future goal: to sip their own wine as they look out over their own small vineyard. Although the Sparhawk Vineyard is not yet a reality, this label represents a look to the future. Greg drew the image with ink on paper first, then scanned it into his computer to add color. Hopefully winning the silver medal in our label contest will further inspire them to start growing some grapes of their own.</p> <p>Prizes: Pail of Straight-A cleanser from Logic, Inc., Gift certificate from My Own Labels, Gift certificate from Grape and Granary, Five vials of wine yeast from White Labs, Inc.</p>

Silver: Greg and Molly Sparhawk
<p><font size="3"><strong>Robin S. Davis • Alpine, California</strong></font></p> <p> <p>Davis makes her red wines and this white plum wine from her home in California. Robin notes that some people think that any fruit other than grapes cannot make “real” wine, and her defiance of this belief makes her “Plum Loco!” Her stance on the matter is backed by her friends who love the wine and claim they’d rather be Plum Loco than drink ordinary white wine. Davis has been making wine for three years. In her “former life,” she was a graphic designer and her passion is now staying home as a full-time mommy. She uses her graphic skills for designing different labels for each wine and blend that she makes.
