In 2006 a tornado took out 30 trees between our lake home and the water I decided to build stone terraces to stablilize the hill and then thought grapes would be the perfect addition.
Jeff Shoemaker, Freedom • Pennsylvania
My home vineyard, Le Chateau Poni, resides on 1.5 acres of land, and my home winery is in my 150-year old colonial style home. I am high on top of a hill, which usually has a nice steady wind that helps to dry off the vines after a rain or morning dew. The sun exposure is also great - I have a wide-open sky, which has no problem ripening a cluster of grapes. My vines don\'t overlook Lake Erie, but they seem to be very happy with where they are growing.
