Check out winning labels from past annual competitions! The best homemade labels for homemade wine.
Thousands of entries streamed into our Vermont editorial offices this summer for consideration in the 7th annual WineMaker Label Contest. The staff gathered around our large conference table to evaluate the entries in waves. After much deliberation, some arguing, and a few glasses of wine, we arrived at the winners featured on the next several pages. We hope you enjoy looking at them as much as we enjoyed judging them! Thanks to all who entered and to our prize sponsors.
With over 1,000 varied entries to decide amongst, judging our 6th Annual WineMaker Label Contest was a daunting task. Eventually, after much consideration — and a few glasses of wine — we arrived at this year’s set of winners.
For the 5th straight year, WineMaker magazine’s offices were flooded with entries for our annual label contest. Here are the best homemade labels for homemade wine from the nearly 1,000 entries we enjoyed reviewing and judging. Thank you to all who took the time to enter and thank you to our advertisers and retailers who donated prizes to the top winners!
The fourth annual WineMaker label contest reminded us here at Battenkill Communications that our publications stretch far beyond the rural Vermont community where we come to work everyday. This year, we put on our judging hats and opened packages with return addresses from an array of countries across the globe, as well as many from here in U.S. After hours of enjoyment judging the beautiful artwork and sharing laughs over witty anecdotes that complemented the submissions, we had four grand prize candidates from three countries: Israel, Germany and the United States. From the WineMaker staff, we’d like to thank all who spent the time to participate and share their work for this event.
Apparently, the third time really is the charm. Although our first two contests attracted hundreds of great labels, this year the number of entries skyrocketed, and the quality of the artwork hit a high point, too. When the WineMaker staff gathered to judge the entries, it took the better part of a day — and lots of sort-of-friendly arguments — simply to cut the stack in half. Picking the winners was even harder. Though we’re always excited for the people who pull down the prizes, it’s tough to put the remaining labels in the also-ran pile. That’s because every entry represents the time, talent, creative energy and artistic vibe of someone who matters a great deal to us: a WineMaker reader. The labels offer images that are personal and sometimes poignant: baby pictures, faded snapshots, photos of people’s homes, vineyards, ancestors and friends. There are recipes for homemade tomato sauce, hand-drawn illustrations and cartoons, and jokes that made us laugh even if they weren’t really funny. You laugh just because someone tried. In the end, that’s what our contest is all about. Thanks for being a part of it.
